My First Night in a New House in a New Country

Some years ago I was given an opportunity to return to Asia to work. Moving overseas was not so daunting as we had already spent a few years in Thailand 5 years earlier and so had some Asian experience. However this was a much wider role managing South East Asia living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We were much more aware second time around about the logistics of moving and hired removalists that had an overseas office in KL and would look after everything. We had stayed in an apartment for a more than a month waiting for our container of furniture to arrive. Thankfully it arrived safe and sound and the unpacking process started at our new home. It took most of the day, but we were not in a position to move in straight away. The problem whether real or not was that with a home that had been empty for some time and with the container and removalists in full view all day, I felt that I was running a risk in leaving the house unoccupied until we moved in. Leaving my family in the apartment, I spent the first night camped around boxes on a hard floor downstairs. I slept poorly as I heard every creak, every movement outside and worried that someone was about to break in. After all, it would be rich pickings given that our belongings were still in boxes and could easily be removed.

The removalists were excellent. The packing process in Sydney had been smooth and the timetables of delivery and the process through customs met our expectations. Overall nothing was damaged. However, after all the planning and meticulous preparation we had forgotten one of the most important. How were we going to make sure that our belongings were safe and secure until we moved into the new house?
